Treatment & Filtration
This video explores treatment and filtration options. Ceramic filter systems are great, but they can be expensive. A personal straw capable of filtering for one individual
- Boiling: The surest method to kill disease-causing germs, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Boil water for at least 1 minute (3 minutes at higher elevations).
- Chemical Disinfection: Use unscented household chlorine bleach, iodine, or chlorine dioxide tablets to disinfect water. Effective for killing most harmful microorganisms.
- Portable Water Filters:
- Mini Sawyer: Filters down to 0.1 microns, weighs 2 ounces, filters up to 100,000 gallons.
- LifeStraw: Filters down to 1 micron, weighs 2 ounces, filters up to 1,000 gallons.
- Gravity Bag Filters: Example from LifeStraw filters down to 0.2 microns, filters up to 500 gallons, weighs 6.9 ounces.
- Stationary Water Filters: Larger options for home use, typically gravity or force-based systems, capable of filtering larger quantities of water.
