Neighborhood & Community
Even if civil unrest isn’t a high-risk event in your area, this video summarizes some of the things you need to implement in your neighborhood. From securing streets, maintaining an alert network, to maintaining a long line of sight, there are preps you can put in place prior to any major disaster where you are forced to bug-in.
- Fortify your home: Secure windows with security film or plywood, reinforce doors, remove potential fire hazards, and install motion-activated lights.
- Prepare your neighborhood: Organize with neighbors to block entrances, establish watch groups, and identify vulnerable residents.
- Leverage technology: Use social media and communication tools to share information, monitor activity, and create a neighborhood surveillance network.
- Create a plan: Develop an escape plan and assemble a bug-out bag in case of evacuation.
- Know your surroundings: Familiarize yourself with neighborhood entry points, potential escape routes, and the resources available within your community.
Approach community building as a prep. Whether that’s making friends of neighbors, even with a casual wave, or it’s a neighborhood readiness group, understand that most “survivors” more often than not survive as a group and not solely on their own. When you turn neighbors into fellow prepared people, you become less of a target and gain an extra set of eyes protecting you.
