We’re hiring…join our team!

Hey, are you someone who enjoys seeing projects completed?  Do you have a need to see things through to completion?  I love people like you. I need you in my life.

I’m someone who loves to teach, inform, and motivate people to prepare in practical ways.  Prepare for what?  Well, if you’ve been paying attention to what’s happening in the world, there’s a lot of uncertainty and fear.  And even worse, people are trying to capitalize on that fear.  People are feeling helpless and losing any sense of hope for the future.  That’s where we come in.  At City Prepping, we love to inform about the challenges we see on the horizon, but more importantly, we love to educate and equip our community with real solutions.  We love to teach practical skills and knowledge on our YouTube channel that empowers people to face an uncertain world.  We’re actively working on building a community on our website of individuals passionate about preparing.

I have spent the last 8 years building my YouTube channel along with my team to over a million subscribers, but there’s so much more that I want to do, and honestly, I’m tapped out on time, so I’m looking to bring in someone that can help take over video production.  Frankly, you could probably do much better than I can, and I’d like to bring you on our team. It does take a pretty specific skill set, which I’ll cover in a moment.

Here’s the deal: I need a detail-oriented person who wants to help people.  I need someone who is passionate about the video medium and who can oversee and drive the process from start to finish.  The role is primarily an administrative position that can move a video down a production line that we’ve established.  Don’t worry; we don’t expect you to reinvent the wheel.  We’ve found certain approaches that have been tested over time, which we’ll teach you, but we realize that there’s always room for improvement, and we’ll gladly welcome your creative insight…in fact, we want them!

You can learn more about the business at cityprepping.com and watch a few of our videos at youtube.com/cityprepping.

So, what does this job entail?

In a nutshell, we need someone to take over the administrative role of handling video production.  We’ve had great success with our channel (hey, a million subscribers isn’t too shabby), but we want to add someone who can oversee their creation from start to finish while bringing their own unique ideas.  Here’s what that practically looks like:

  • Coordinate and brainstorm with Kris to define the video schedule on a monthly basis.  Ultimately, Kris is responsible for the ultimate creative direction, but we want someone who can bring ideas to the table.  Eventually, as you learn and get comfortable with the team, you will increasingly take over this role, but for now, your primary responsibility in the early stages is to oversee production.  We want (and encourage) you to familiarize yourself with our content and find ways to improve them.
  • Coordinate and communicate with our team to move videos down the assembly line from concept to completion.
  • Provide a list of 20 title ideas for each video that create intrigue without violating some of our core values to help educate and equip preppers.
  • Help define thumbnail concepts and oversee their design.  When coordinating with Kris, your job will be to develop three concepts we can discuss together.  We’ll then have you coordinate with the designer to create the thumbnail.
  • Oversee the editing process.  We currently have an editor, but we need someone to review his work and coordinate with our editor to ensure videos are done correctly.
  • You’ll drive the video process from start to finish to ensure we have a polished and professional video.
  • At the end of the day, this job is administrative.  We’re looking for someone who can move the project down the line.  But we always seek someone to bring their thoughts and ideas to the project.

What skills & qualities will you need to possess?

  • Fierce attention to technical detail.
  • Patience to work through big-picture changes.  What the channel is today will hopefully not be the same tomorrow.
  • Kris will be the creative director at the end of the day, but bringing your insight and ideas is very welcome.
  • Ability to organize information to help people practically follow along with our how-to videos.
  • Strong organizational skills in managing hard and fast deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Have the ability to review and provide feedback on videos during the editing phase.  We currently use Adobe Premiere for editing.  We are also looking to begin utilizing https://frame.io/ to enable us to review the video before it’s exported and provide feedback to the editor.  At the end of the day, you won’t be editing, so a basic level of understanding of Premiere and/or Frame.io is fine.
  • Own your own computer.

Here’s your responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Kris on a weekly basis to review the video schedule at the beginning of the week.
  • Keep in touch with the individual team members to ensure each video goes from concept to completion.  Our team has researchers, writers, editors, and creative asset managers to bring videos to life.  You’d help oversee these individuals to move projects down the “assembly line.”
  • Help identify ways to improve videos.  Again, we’re not only looking for someone who can execute a video’s production but rather help us find ways to improve it.  We like to observe and implement the 1% improvement rule of incremental improvements.  When we interview potential administrative producers, we will look for individuals with ideas to help grow the channel.
  • Help identify ways to improve the overall content strategy.  Again, the primary responsibility here, apart from ensuring videos get completed correctly, is to help with the overall growth and objectives of the channel.  We have no sacred cows here. We’re open to new ideas (and encourage them).
  • Oversee the video once it is uploaded to YouTube to ensure everything is done correctly (title, thumbnail, tags, description, recommended videos on the end screen, etc.).  You will be the final individual to ensure a video is ready to go live.  I’ll provide you with a checklist that you’ll use to ensure everything is configured correctly.
  • You will handle the final video upload after the editor completes it, so you should have a fast Internet connection.
  • Other administrative tasks as necessary to ensure videos are properly completed (Yeah, there’s always that dreaded “Includes, but is not limited to…” clause.)
  • Honestly, your main job is to make us look good and free up Kris’s time to focus on growing the business.  You’ll be working closely with Kris.

Starting out, this is a 10-15 hour per week job, although we’ll evaluate that together during a trial period.  If the person we hire can do this job successfully and we’re seeing real growth in our channel, we’ll expand the content, which will expand your role.  It requires someone who can give it some attention daily during U.S. working hours from 8 am to 5 pm PST.  I’m pretty flexible about hours as long as you’re available during these times, preferably in the morning.

Also, just so you know, everyone on my team works virtually, so there’s no commute.  Living near me is not important.  So you actually can take that nap when you need it!  However, we do tend to talk with each other a lot in Slack and Zoom video meetings.

You probably want to know what it pays. “Commensurate with experience” really isn’t that helpful, although it is kind of true. The rate will depend on how well you fit the skills I outlined. We’ll likely start on a trial basis of $35/hour.  This is a contractor position paid by the hours worked.  We pay on the 1st and the 15th of each month.

If you’re interested in joining and organizing a team of individuals that is influencing millions of people with information that is changing lives, let’s talk.

Contact me with the following:

  • Tell me a little about yourself.
  • Why do you love producing videos, and what’s your experience?
  • How do you meet the various skills and tasks listed?
  • Links to videos you’ve produced.
  • The email’s subject line should only include this phrase (and nothing else): “I Live In a Treehouse”.  It helps me sift through a lot of emails and identify your application.
  • Keep your letter somewhat brief. We can dig into the details later. Use this primarily as an introduction.
  • Please the information to this email address: members@cityprepping.com

Thanks!
